MAS in Arts Management
The MSc program (MAS) in Arts Management - a program allowing students to combine work and study - is a scientifically-grounded and practical program which qualifies participants to assume strategic and operational managerial tasks and leadership roles in cultural activities and projects.
An arts management study program at university provides not only a solid, scientific foundation, but also consistent practical relevance to all course content and close collaboration with various cultural institutions and projects. The Center for Arts Management also places a strong emphasis on entrepreneurial thought and action without neglecting cultural freedom, creativity, and an innovative spirit.

Objectives and content
The MAS in Arts Management is designed for experienced managers in the cultural arts who want to systematize what they already know and bring their understanding completely up to date. The study program can also enable others who are new to this field to move to this diverse and exciting professional environment. In addition, the program offers an opportunity to develop and cultivate a private and professional network of contacts in the cultural sector.
Students are prepared for leadership and management duties in the cultural sector. They recognize the problems facing managers in cultural organizations and projects, are able to analyze these, develop solutions, and work out corresponding courses of action and behavior.
The MSc program curriculum is built on the study objectives and takes account of all aspects of an interdisciplinary practice in cultural administration. Cultural and management know-how, cultural politics, legal aspects of culture, and cultural sociology are integrated in such a way that the functional interface of cultural administration works as an intermediary between culture, education, commerce, and politics.
The study program consists of nine subject modules including a Master's thesis:
Module 1: Introductory Seminar
Module 2: Cultural Settings I (Cultural politics, promoting culture, cultural communication, cultural industries)
Module 3: Cultural Settings II (Legal aspects of culture, cultural sectors: theater management, orchestra management, museum management, management of performers, cultural activities)
Module 4: Theory of Culture (Introduction to the theory of culture, cultural sociology)
Module 5: Organization & Strategy (Strategic management, cultural organizations, cultural institutions, cultural enterprises, management of cultural projects and organizations)
Module 6: Leadership & Entrepreneurship (Business plan, start-up, cultural entrepreneurship)
Module 7: Marketing & Communicating Culture (Marketing culture, audience development, fund-raising, sponsoring)
Module 8: Finance (Financing culture, accounting)
Module 9: Master's Thesis

At the beginning of the program there is an introductory weekend which reflects on professional self-image against a background of critical engagement with the commercial, ethical, and political tasks of cultural administration. Research methodology is taught in the introductory event "Academic Research" and in the Master's colloquium.
The teaching and learning methodologies of the MAS in Arts Management meet the requirements and demands of a modern, continuing education program for adults. Specialist knowledge is taught in a concentrated and selective way. The methodological goal of the study program is the application of acquired knowledge to professional practice.
Part-time degree program. Every Friday and Saturday (excl. school vacations) during a two-year period.
Enquiries and contact
As a general rule, applicant must hold a degree awarded by a university (university of applied sciences, university, or technical university) or by a technical college. In certain cases, students without a university degree may be admitted. Such admission requests are considered by the Head of Program on an individual basis.
Ideally, the applicant should have a minimum of five years' professional experience and corresponding management experience in a cultural field (leadership function, responsibility for a project or particular area).
